Bakunawa // Karimlan 2019

Bakunawa is a Filipino mythical creature. It is believed to be a gigantic dragon from the seas that devours the moons. It is known to look like a giant sea serpent with a mouth big enough to eat the moon.

The story of Bakunawa started when Bathala created the first seven moons to light up the night sky. Bakunawa, amazed by the bright light, wanted to bring the moons down to its lair. One night, it rose from the sea and devoured one of the moons that Bathala created. Unknown to Bakunawa, the moon melted inside its stomach and eventually lost its brightness.
Bakunawa got angry and decided to eat all the remaining six moons one by one. As Bakunawa was about to devour the last moon, the people in the Visayas devised a plan to bang their pots and make loud noises so the creature would go away. This plan worked. Every time an eclipse would occur, the people in the Visayas would make sounds hoping to save the moon from being eaten by Bakunawa.

The design of this Bakunawa was initially made as a Grade 9 Math Project involving the use of circles and a drawing compass. Since Bakunawa is described as serpent-like, I used a conformation that would be more forgiving given the capable circle requirements.
This design took inspiration from famous serpentine creatures such as Rayquaza from the Pokémon franchise and the daikaiju Titanosaurus from the Godzilla franchise.
*The scaling of the moon made Bakunawa around 100 times larger than the final design, even more, capable of devouring the Sun.

The original drawn design of Bakunawa was translated digitally by tracing the original design in Adobe Draw. The red color scheme was changed to a light blue color scheme to make the creature more unique for Karimlan.
